“ 5.0. As in previous December we two dined at Ambos during our annual trip to Zushi. Consistently excellent. Reservations recommended: we made ours via Instagram messaging. Within 5 minute walk of either of Zushi's two train stations (Zushi and Hayama-Zushi). FOOD: 5.0 - EVERY DISH. Beautiful presentation and outstanding taste. Seasoning perfect with palate-pleasing texture. We shared all of our dishes. Menu is in Japanese and English. - 5.0: Homemade Brioche toast. soft with hint of butter taste. - 5.0: Tuna salad with Beets and Treviso. Raw tuna combined with beets and a French cheese. Heavenly. - 5.0: Piquillo peppers stuffed with crab and celeriac, served with riso. Gorgeous appearance and subtle tastes. So delicious. - 5.0: Omi Duck Confit with Fava Beans. Wow. Sort of like a refined cassoulet with perfect light seasoning and scrumptious taste. Even my partner, who is not normally a fan of duck, raved about it. - 5.0. Basque Cheesecake. Made with a high-end cheese. Very special. Very. We had nice glass wines which paired well with our food. SERVICE: 5.0. The husband/wife team made us feel special. AMBIANCE: 5.0. A couple of tables and counter seating in a restrained classy atmosphere with top-notch soothing yet stimulating background music: the best playlist we have experienced in a restaurant anywhere. DEC 2024 REVIEW: Overall 4.5. We two dined at Ambos during our annual trip to Zushi, making dinner reservations (via Instagram Messaging) for our day of arrival in Japan. Exceeded expectations. Reservations recommended. Quiet location on a narrow street within a 5 minute walk from either of Zushi's train stations. FOOD: 5.0. The dishes artfully combined Andalucian and (to me due to the sauces that came with some of the dishes) French cuisine with Japanese tastes. We shared every dish and all were outstanding. The dinner menu was in Japanese and Spanish/English. - Carpaccio. Raw fish in sauce with couscous. Lovely. - Scallops and Turnips. The scallops were perfectly cooked, with a tiny touch of crispness. The turnips were also perfect: firm and not mushy. Sauce was excellent. - Duck Paella (Paella of the day). Outstanding. - Housemade bread: Like everything else, perfectly done. Warm with light butter. - Basque Cheesecake. My partner loves cheesecake, but only within a narrow taste/texture range. She deemed this cheesecake as the best she can remember having. - Hot Coffee. Even the coffee was excellent, both in taste and quantity. SERVICE: 5.0. We felt like valued customers. DRINKS: Natural wines, cava, sherry, and beer (craft, Sapporo, and Spanish) available. I appreciated the Sapporo Akaboshi (red star) beer while my partner had two natural wines. AMBIANCE. 4.5. Relaxed and comfortable, yet classy. Soft lighting with light-colored walls with warm wood trimming and furniture. Pleasant low-volume slow jazz music. There was a table for four people and another for two people; about seven seats lined a wooden table attached to the wall facing the kitchen. All seating locations were good. ”

“ Tucked away in a side street adjacent to Zushi Ginza, Ambos is one of those great finds you can't help but be really pleased to have found. Run by a couple with the wife holding down the customers and the husband cooking up the dishes. The restaurant is cosy with room for about 4 at the counter, one four top, and two two tops so really only room for about a dozen customers at any one time. We really enjoyed the appetizers, even the olives were different from the average and tasted delicious The mushroom ajillo came with a healthy serving of accompanying bread and the homemade sausage came with a surprise serving of creamed spinach. The duck confit was also done well with a very crispy skin and served on a bed of purple mild sauerkraut and peas. The seafood paella was actually the most disappointing dish as I felt the flavors were somewhat dull and lacking. I felt like I could cook the same at home - unlike the duck or mushrooms. The menu does change periodically although not on a large scale. We would absolutely go back and truly enjoyed our meal. They do speak English and the menu is handwritten and bilingual. ”
